Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson
NOTES
- "Ne te quaesirevis extra"- do not look outside of yourself
- A true genius speaks what they think not what others want them to think
- If you have a great thought, act on it or else someone with the same thought will do it first
- You do not know your true potential, and you never will until you do something about it
- We do not fully express what we feel instead we choose to feel bad for thinking uniquely
- Trust yourself
- When you trust yourself your heart and mind will be at peace
- Acknowledge the present, and the past as great
- The young are true geniuses because they act on how they feel, not how others want them to
- In society, we only look to be accepted through doing what others do and self-reliance is to not want to be accepted but be unique
- It is shameful how easily we give in to those we consider higher than us in society
- Something that scares us from self-trust is that we want to stay the same, but in order to trust yourself you must change
- Do not be afraid to break off your boring consistency, speak out for yourself.
- It is not bad to be misunderstood, all the great minds were misunderstood
- We should know our worth
- Man thinks only of the past and does not focus on the present
- Focus on the present and you will be happier
