Catharsis: strong or repressed emotions
Running is a catharsis for me.

Taboo: something forbidden by culture
In the Catholic religion, it is considered a taboo to get a tattoo. 

Sordid: Filthy or dirty; foul
Zinedine Zidane rose up from the sordid streets he used to live on, to being considered one of the greatest soccer(football) players of all time.

Swindle: To cheat or defraud of money or property
The criminal swindled me of my money.

Frivolous: silly, unnecessary
The use of "bad words" all the time is frivolous.

Inadvertently: unintentionally, because of an oversight
While racing I inadvertently elbowed the runner next to me.

Incendiary: causing or capable of causing fire

When lit, the matchstick becomes incendiary.

Jargon: unintelligible or meaningless talk or writing; gibberish

When trying to wing an essay without having a rough draft, or studied, you end up with a lot of jargon.

Colloquialism: colloquial(relating to conversation; conversational)  style or quality

Certain colloquialisms are difficult to understand, even to AP English students.

Archaism: past form of speech; old writing style

George Orwell refers to some writers' writings as archaism in his artice, "Politics and the English Language".

Cudgel: a short, heavy stick; a club

To knock out the house robber the man used a cudgel.

Egregious: conspicuously bad or offensive
The cheating husband was an egregious liar.

Anesthetize: to induce anesthesia in 

When I went to the dentist I had to get anesthetized.  

Euphonious: pleasing or agreeable to the ear

The Weeknd's singing is euphonious to many.

Scrupulous: conscientious and exact; painstaking 

I payed scrupulous attention to what the math teacher was saying in order to pass my test.

Perverted: to cause to turn away from what is right, proper, or good; corrupt
The coach took a perverted pleasure from watching his team suffer a hard workout.

Superfluous: being beyond what is required or sufficient
Some writer's writings tend to be superfluous.

Saxon: a member of a West Germanic tribal group that inhabited northern Germany and invaded Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries A.D. with the Angles and Jutes

There are people in the world who have Saxon blood in them.

Slovenly: messy, unkempt; sloppy

My backpack is slovenly.

Provocation: anything that causes a response

Donald Trump's remarks about immigration were meant for a provocation.
