GREAT GATSBY chapter 3 notes

 Characters: Nick, Daisy, Tom, Jordan Baker, Myrtle(Miss. Wilson), Catherine, Mrs. Mckee, Mr. Mckee, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Gatsby, Mr. Mumble(x3), Lucille

Word "HIS" is repeated many times

Displacement: When a character is out of familiar context, out of place in that time

Anachronism: (Chronos: time)(anachronist: someone without time)

Prodigality: supposed to be there

Use of quotation marks can be used as a sign of irony or sarcasm

Contemptuous is repetitive when Jordan Baker is mentioned

"You've dyed your hair since then" is somewhat of an insult back then because you weren't supposed to notice that someone is trying to upkeep themselves

People dress up and just attend Gatsby's parties

There are many rumors about Gatsby

Rumours: He killed a man, he was a German spy

homogeneity: State or quality of homogeneous
homogeneous: made up of the same people or things

Gatsby served in the American army, Seventh Infantry

Important people attend Gatsby's party

All of these characters want to be seen for what they have not for what they are

Gatsby main phrase seem to be "Old sport"

Florid and Corpulent is how Nick imagined Gatsby
Florid: red in the face/ skin
Corpulent: Obese

"the lonely crowd"

Condescension: talking down upon

obstetrical:
drunkness is a symbol of underlying sadness

There's a private Gatsby and a public Gatsby

Fitzgerald used colloquialism to show that people are drunk

Gatsby throws parties because he feels isolated/lonely

Jordan Baker is "incurably dishonest"

"Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known"
